Team Leader - Residential Inspections

About the role

As Team Leader Residential Inspections, you will lead a team of Building Surveyors responsible for residential inspections. You'll ensure statutory obligations, accreditation requirements, and customer expectations are consistently met while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team culture.

Working closely with other Building Team Leaders and the Building Operations Manager, you'll coordinate workloads, provide technical guidance, support continuous improvement initiatives, and help shape the future capability of the team.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading, coaching, and developing a team of Building Surveyors.
  • Managing residential inspection and certification workflows to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, accreditation standards, and business KPIs.
  • Providing technical leadership and specialist advice on residential building matters.
  • Supporting recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Building strong relationships with customers, industry stakeholders, MBIE, and IANZ.
  • Managing customer enquiries, complaints, and complex technical issues.
  • Driving continuous improvement across policies, processes, and quality systems.
  • Conducting quality and technical audits to support compliance and best practice.
  • Supporting emergency building safety assessments when required.

About you

This role is ideal for someone with a proven track record in leading others, solving problems, and driving continuous improvement. While technical expertise is valuable, your strength in people leadership is what matters most.

You bring a strategic mindset, strong communication skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality services.

  • Experience (2+ years) in people management
  • Understanding of the Building Act, the Building Consent process, Building Regulations, the New Zealand Building Code, and the ability to convey this to customers
  • Willingness to confidently make appropriate decisions and take responsibility for them. Awareness of limitations of knowledge, and willingness to seek appropriate assistance when necessary
  • Strong understanding of digital ways of working, with experience of using technology to achieve effective outcomes and driving organisational innovation and change, high level of digital literacy
  • Experience (5+ years) in a BCA inspecting and/or processing environment
  • Experience working in a local/central government environment
