Building Surveyor - Building Compliance

Are you an experienced building professional looking to combine your technical expertise with regulatory compliance and customer service excellence?
We are seeking a highly motivated Building Surveyor - Building Compliance to join our Building Compliance Team.

In this rewarding role, you will play a key part in ensuring buildings meet legislative and safety requirements while supporting customers to achieve positive compliance outcomes through practical advice, collaboration, and expert guidance.

About the role

As a Building Surveyor - Building Compliance, you will be responsible for delivering Territorial Authority functions under the Building Act while supporting our community to achieve positive compliance outcomes. Working as part of a collaborative team, you'll provide practical advice, investigate compliance matters, and help ensure buildings are safe and fit for purpose.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Investigating building compliance service requests
  • Conducting site inspections and compliance assessments
  • Assessing building safety concerns and regulatory matters
  • Processing Certificates of Acceptance and exemption applications
  • Issuing notices and compliance-related documentation
  • Providing advice and support to customers on building compliance matters
  • Report writing and maintaining accurate records
  • Managing workloads to meet statutory timeframes

This is a full-time permanent role, Monday to Friday, based in Rolleston.

About you

You will be a confident communicator with a positive, approachable attitude and the ability to build effective relationships with customers and colleagues. You'll also be comfortable taking direction, responding to feedback, and contributing positively as part of a collaborative team.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Have at least 5 years' experience in the building industry across a variety of New Zealand building projects
  • Have at least 3 years' experience in a regulatory compliance or similar compliance environment
  • Have excellent communication, report writing, and time management skills
  • Be confident interpreting and applying building legislation and technical requirements
  • Make sound decisions using judgement, research, and a risk-based approach
  • Be customer-focused, approachable, and able to resolve complex issues collaboratively
  • Be highly organised with strong attention to detail and quality

You will also have:

  • A sound understanding of the Building Act, Building Regulations, Building Code, and Building Consent processes
  • Knowledge of BCA accreditation and Territorial Authority review schemes
  • High-level digital literacy and experience working with a range of software applications
  • Current Class 1 Driver Licence
