About the role:
As Business Planning Lead, you'll be at the heart of ensuring Selwyn District Council makes sound, evidence-based investment decisions. You'll lead the adaptation and implementation of Treasury's Better Business Case methodology, creating clear frameworks that give staff the tools to plan with confidence.
This role is both strategic and hands-on — you'll guide the development of business cases, provide advice and coaching, and ensure decision-makers have the information they need to balance investment, value, and community outcomes. You'll also deliver training and reviews that strengthen planning capability across the organisation, embedding a culture of continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the development and implementation of business case frameworks tailored to Council's needs.
- Providing coaching, training, and tools to staff preparing business cases.
- Facilitating post-business case reviews and embedding lessons learned.
- Supporting decision-makers with clear, well-structured advice that ensures sound investment choices.
About you:
You'll be a natural communicator who enjoys helping others build capability and confidence. With a strong background in business case planning, you'll bring:
- At least 8 years' experience in developing and implementing business case planning, ideally in the public sector.
- Accreditation as a Better Business Case Practitioner and strong knowledge of the 5 Case Model Framework.
- Experience delivering training, coaching, and reviews to support continuous improvement.
- Strong relationship skills and the ability to navigate ambiguity with a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach.
