Principal Engineer
About us
Selwyn District Council has a vacancy for a Principal Engineer to join our Engineering team to provide technical leadership, expert engineering advice, and contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering practices and policies. This role is pivotal in ensuring high-quality development outcomes aligned with Council's strategic objectives, statutory requirements, and community expectations.
About the role
You will help drive the development engineering process here at Selwyn District Council. A high level of technical and leadership expertise is required for the role, along side this, you will be responsible for
- Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Provide expert guidance on complex engineering challenges across all technical workstreams
- Quality Assurance & Standards: Review and approve engineering designs, reports, and deliverables to ensure they meet high standards of accuracy, compliance, and innovation
- Development Engineering & Planning: Provide expert advice on resource consent and engineering acceptance applications
- Policy & Strategic Advice: Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, Bylaws and District Plan reviews
- Continuous Improvement & Innovation: Lead quality improvements within the Development Engineering function
- Collaboration: Work closely with the Engineering & Stakeholder Manager and other leaders across the organisation to ensure alignment of technical advice and processes
- Project Involvement: Lead or contribute to cross-functional project teams as a subject matter expert
About you
Being an excellent communicator with extensive Engineering experience, you are someone who can relate well to a wide range of people, able to use your initiative and work independently. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to make rational judgements and provide workable solutions to a range of problems.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) or related degree
- At least 10 years extensive experience working in development engineering and/or asset management with a focus on design/construction standards and specifications
- Demonstratable Engineering Problem Solving Skills Across Multiple Engineering Disciplines
- Ability and commitment to coach and influence a team without being a direct line manager
- Ability to communicate clearly and appropriately for a range of audiences and adapt style accordingly.
