Principal Asset Management Engineer - Surface Water

About us

Selwyn District Council has a vacancy for a Principal Asset Management Engineer to join our Water Services Asset Management Team. As a senior member of the Infrastructure and Property team you will bring your technical skills and leadership to drive change and provide high quality asset planning advice. Selwyn is growing and developing at a rapid pace; therefore, we need skilled people who can lead and collaborate to make it happen.

About the role

This role will be pivotal in leading planning of surface water infrastructure to enable rapid urban growth. You will help to set the vision and direction for the future of surface water and collaborate to drive change to improve and restore waterway health by:

  • Being responsible for the provision of technical advice for stormwater, land drainage and water race servicing, network capacity and flood risk to meet growth demands.
  • Interpreting and interrogating our flood models and masterplans and providing flood hazard advice.
  • Providing input to our Annual and Long-Term Plan processes, including proposing infrastructure upgrades to meet compliance, levels of service and future demands.
  • Working closely alongside the Operations and Development Engineering Teams to best serve our communities.
  • Represent Council on strategic matters in the surface Water space
  • Driving change particularly to help us implement a multi values approach to waterway management across the organisation.
  • Leading delivery of strategic projects and catchment planning initiatives through partnership and collaboration.

About you

Being an excellent communicator, you are someone who has a high level of technical skill, can relate well to a wide range of people, able to use your initiative and work independently. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to lead, make rational judgements and provide workable solutions to a range of problems.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)
  • Strong technical skills with at least 15 years' engineering work experience in stormwater, surface water, local Government experience is preferred.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills and a high attention to detail
  • High levels of motivation, be outcomes focused and an innovative professional
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to lead and influence
  • A proven track record of partnering with and leading multi-disciplinary teams including external contractors, consultants, Iwi, landowners and other agencies
  • Ability to rationalise technical information, think strategically and deliver to required timeframes
  • An ability to write clear and concise written material and verbal presentations that convey technical information in non-technical language.
