About the team

Selwyn District Council's Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning (ACLL) Team is an innovative, dynamic, and talented team that provides a wide range of public library, cultural, literacy, and learning experiences right across the Selwyn District.

We have an opportunity for someone to join us full time to cover a period of parental leave and are seeking an experienced professional with leadership experience from the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum).

About the role

This role is rewarding and varied with a fantastic mix of leadership, operational delivery and collaboration. You will build positive relationships with and lead the Digital Library Assistant based at Te Ara Ātea as well as a team of Community Library Service Assistants (CLSCA's) who are spread across our district. You will support CLSCAs with tailored training from day one, helping them grow into confident, capable team members who deliver high-quality services to our community.

As a member of the ACLL Leadership Team, you'll bring strengths in leadership, coaching, planning, communication, and relationship management. Experience in library operations is a strong advantage given the scope and importance of the role.

The people you both lead and serve are from all walks of life and for this reason, you will need to demonstrate a good understanding and capability to successfully engage with others, including Māori. You will need to honour and have a good understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Alongside leadership, your key focus areas will be maintaining best practice and up to date library circulation, collections and memberships. You'll ensure that that the library management system (National Library led Kōtui consortium of New Zealand public libraries) and Internet/ WIFI (National Library led Aotearoa People's Network Kaharoa, APNK) are working well and that ACLL colleagues are well trained in the use of these key library resources. Similarly, you will maintain an operational lead of our RFID systems, Interloans, and Any Questions services while managing processes associated with digital inclusion channels such as Skinny Jump.

Working with the Heritage and Content Team you'll ensure physical collections are well maintained, displayed, and work with colleagues to ensure services, programmes and resources are connected, accessible, relevant and easy to use.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role our ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in the following areas;

  • Working in a GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Museums, Archives) institution, particularly libraries.
  • Successfully leading teams to meet set objectives
  • Strong relationship management
  • Ability to respectfully engage in a Māori cultural setting
  • A relevant qualification
