Resource Management Planners

About the role:

Exciting opportunities await at Selwyn District Council as our Resource Consents team expands to support our vibrant and rapidly growing district.

As a Planner, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality planning services to both internal and external customers. You'll work alongside a dynamic team, helping to ensure we meet the planning needs of our community in a way that is efficient, effective, and compliant with the Resource Management Act and relevant District Plans.

Key responsibilities:

  • Resource Consent Processing: undertake all process steps and tasks associated with processing resource consent applications and related approvals, in accordance with all legislative requirements and authority delegated by the Council.
  • Information and Advice: Provide customers with correct, timely and consistent Resource Management Act and District Plan information and technical advice.
  • Hearings and Evidence: Prepare and present evidence as an expert witness as required. Undertake research in support of planning related appeals or proceedings.
  • Land Information Memoranda and Building Consent Checks: undertake all process steps and tasks to deliver planning input to Land Information Memoranda and Building Consent processes in accordance with all legislative requirements and authority delegated by the Council.
  • Contribution to Achievement of Resource Management Objectives: Proactively identify and communicate potential policy issues to Team Leader and other Council teams, liaise with other Council teams to provide feedback and support on plan changes, policy formulation, plan effectiveness monitoring, resource consent monitoring, and compliance and enforcement matters.

About you:

Experienced Senior Planners: You'll bring 7+ years of experience in resource management planning, with a strong background in the Resource Management Act. You'll have a sound understanding of processing resource consents and related applications, and you will have worked on large-scale or complex applications. In addition to your technical expertise, you will provide leadership and support to the team, coaching and mentoring less experienced team members while assisting the Team Leader in overseeing project delivery and decision-making.

Experienced planners: With 4+ years of experience, you'll work with increasing independence on a range of applications and contribute to the overall team's success. You'll assist less experienced team members, providing guidance and support where needed, and continue to build on your planning expertise. You'll have a solid understanding of the Resource Management Act and experience in processing resource consents and related applications, with a growing ability to take on more complex tasks and responsibilities.

Great Graduates: If you're a recent graduate, we're looking for enthusiasm, a strong interest in planning, and the drive to learn and grow in the role.

You will also have:

  • A tertiary qualification (or be completing) in Urban/Regional Planning, Resource Management or a related discipline which is recognised by the NZPI.
  • A customer-focused approach with the ability to provide accurate advice and solve problems effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
